I Collect Photographs of Other People?

For years I've been collecting photographs. No, I don't have some pricey pile of Anton Corbijn images in a vault. What I do have is boxes of someone else's old discarded memories. Family photos from someone else's family. Who knows how these pictures can escape a familys grasp. But they do. In various antique, thrift, junque stores and flea markets i've found everything from ancient tin-types and cartes de visite to Memorial photos to somebodys kid's school pictures to whole family photo albums containing pictures from the late 1800's to the 1980's. Of course I don't collect just any old picture. It has to have a Un/certain something about it. Maybe it's double exposed. Maybe it's some kids in crazy costumes. Maybe it's just a family grouped on the front porch. It has to speak to me in some way. It has to move me.

"I'm sure my customers never think about it, but these snapshots are their little stand against the flow of time. The shutter clicked. Flash goes off. and they stop time. Just for the blink of an eye...and if these pictures have anything important to say to future generations...it's this: I was here. I existed. I was young, I was happy, and someone cared enough about me in this world...to take my picture. " - Sy the photo guy
